Our work draws together an experienced, dedicated team along with some of the UK's most respected social entrepreneurs. The agency works with local churches in partnership with Church structures and denominations across the country. We help churches to understand the problems they face and develop imaginative yet realistic solutions.
Colin Bayley
Colin is board member and secretary of One Church 100 Uses and business
manager of Andrew Mawson Partnerships. His project work includes the St Paul's Way
Transformational Project: a ground breaking regeneration project in London's East
End. Colin has 30 years business experience having worked for major international
companies and leading professional services firms. He was a marketing director at
global accountants Arthur Andersen and business development director at international
lawyers Stephenson Harwood. Previously, Colin was managing director of three leading
London public relations consultancies. At Booker plc., he was responsible for the
Booker Prize for Fiction. Colin has helped to launch a successful programme of social
enterprise in schools. He has twice been churchwarden of his parish church, where
he led both fundraising for a new church centre and the refurbishment of the Victorian
church interior. He is a long serving chair of Governors of his local Church of England
Primary School.
Donald Findley
Donald's background as a scientist yields a perceptive analysis, which
compliments 20 years in community and economic development. A classic social entrepreneur,
he enjoys a challenge and can call on a very broad range of skills to deliver the
goods.
Donald created and then implemented systems to organise and report on 10 European programmes (both ESF and ERDF), 3 large Lottery projects and an entire SRB Programme. He has also overseen over 100 grants from Trusts and Corporates. This amounts to some £30m. Donald played a central role in transforming the Bromley-by-Bow Centre. He also managed the construction of a £1.5m Healthy Living Centre.
In 2000, Donald joined CAN as a Director of Finance and Development and was part of a core team that developed the successful UnLtd £100m bid to the Millennium Commission.
Donald was then seconded to the London Development Agency(LDA) as an advisor on Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Enterprise. He is one of the founding Directors of One Church, 100 Uses.
Elizabeth Hodges
Liz is Andrew’s Executive Assistant and also works as a Project Assistant for 1C100U. She holds a BA in English and Music from Exeter University and a MA in English Literature at King’s College London. She is currently completing a PhD at Oxford University.
Liz worked in the House of Lords for a year and was nominated for best Parliamentary Researcher of the Year. Having worked on many charitable projects, Liz wanted to further her interest in social enterprise.
Liz is currently helping to lead on the re-development of St Paul's Church in Harman's Water, Bracknell. This is a joint URC / Anglican building which is wanting to strengthen its outreach programme in the local community.
Andrew Mawson
Andrew's career in the social sector has spanned over 30 years. Before
founding Community Action Network in 1998, he developed the renowned Bromley-by-Bow
Centre, which became the UK's first Healthy Living Centre. Andrew then helped to
found Poplar Harca (one of the first housing companies) and Leaside Regeneration
Ltd.
Andrew is now the director of Andrew Mawson Partnerships and the best selling author of the book, The Social Entrepreneur: Making Communities Work. Recently, he launched the Water City Group to create and implement a vision for East London revitalised by the opportunities of the 21st Century and the 2012 Olympic Games.
Andrew received an OBE for his work at Bromley and was made a life Peer in 2007. Andrew is also a Non-Stipendiary Minister in the United Reformed Church.
David McMullan
David was born and educated in Northern Ireland. After qualifying
as a pharmacist, he joined the UK subsidiary of Les Laboratoires Roussel as a medical
representative. For fifteen years, David was promoted through various sales and marketing
roles before being made General Manager of Overseas Operations. He spent three years
in Australia opening and operating a subsidiary company of Roussel. In 1972, David
joined the Beecham Group as Director of International Operations and in 1988 was
appointed Chairman of International Operations with SmithKline Beecham. He was responsible
for over 5000 staff covering manufacturing, marketing, finance, legal affairs, and
human resources. After retiring in 1990, David has worked with charitable operations.
He has planned, organised and established several charities and has chaired a number
of national charities. David is currently Chairman of One Church 100 uses, also Chairman
of a charitable trust, an Ambassador for the scouting movement and Secretary of his
church. Since 1991, he has helped unemployed men and women find employment through
a free job club charity.
Richard Oxley
Richard has a background in Historic Architecture, graduating from
the University of Cambridge in 2005. Richard developed business and management skills
by forming the social enterprise construction company Grassroot Garden Ltd in 2007,
which specialises in a new approach towards playground design.
Richard joined the agency in September 2009, taking a role made available in partnership with English Heritage. Currently he is responsible for project management in the East Midlands region, and for developing a national database research programme relating to the United Reformed Church's listed buildings. The main focus of work over the coming years will aim to co-locate a variety of services in underused buildings in the East Midlands, some of which are listed, for the benefit of church groups and the communities around them.
Reverend Peter Southcombe
Peter is an ordained minister and is Regeneration Director
for the United Reformed Church Southern Synod. He has secured funding for a number
of churches and community groups.
He established an award-winning social enterprise helping unemployed people into work through recycling projects and has gained experience in the EU funding arena.
Peter is now charged with helping faith communities discover and develop social enterprises in the local community. He completed an MA researching social enterprise within the United Reformed Church. He is on the Executive of the South East of England Faith Forum and Director of Hope in the Community Ltd.
Peter serves the URC on a Conference of European Churches committee in Brussels looking at Integration of the European Union. He also chairs the North Kent Community Forum and was instrumental in securing £3.3m through the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to establish Community Enterprise Hubs within the Kent Thames Gateway. He is a board member on the Thames Gateway Kent Partnership.
